IT's RAINING RESUMES AT GOOGLE..

Excuse me for writing about Google again , I'm obsessed with this company .
I was reading what makes it so great and happy to learn that It's not only it's ESOP , Free Food , Game Rooms , Massages , Happy Hours ( Thursday , 5PM) and so on. Most of the employees feel happy and satisfied because of it's "Culture" .
But the perks and the playfulness aren't why so many of the world's technophiles pine for a job at Google, named Fortune's 2007 "best company to work for," according to product manager Jonathan Rochelle.
"The perks give you a sense of feeling valued," Rochelle said. "But the most important thing for me is that I have what feels like the right amount of autonomy. I have a very high degree of decision-making power, and that doesn't mean I'm a senior person -- that's just the culture of Google. People take ownership of what they do and make decisions, so things get done quickly. Every day feels like a productive day."
Think through this , and answer this question " Would you like your kids ( when they grow up ) to join the organisation you are working for ? "

In the mean while ....If there's life on other planets, they are probably e-mailing their résumés to Google .

TO BLINK OR NOT ...

I recently finished reading "Blink" by Malcom Gladwell . I really liked the book . It speaks about :

  • Decisions taken in snap with a very little information can be as effective as calculated ones . He says just " Thin Slice" ( dealing with little information ) and do a snap decision .
  • You can learn how to take effective snap judgements
  • You can learn when you'll go wrong and when not to take these snap judgements

Malcom has tried to explain his point quoting many research reports that "Thin Slicing" really works .

Any takers for this ? What'll happen to those looong meetings , reams of paper for reports , analysis , in our corporate culture and still failing to take decisions .

PRE JOINING MEDICAL SCREENING .. WHY?

Why Organisations ( Corporates ) in India insist on Pre Joining Medical Fitness Tests ? Is this ethical ? Shouldn't they disclose what diseases ( if found ) they'll Reject ?
On the other side there are organisations / schools which talk of inclusion and give conducive environment to even those infected with HIV , and here organisations are asking it's job aspirants to go for " Medical Screening" ...What's this about ?

Few Organisations release there offer letters only post medical test , some ask to get it done before joining .

There need to be absolute transparency around this :

  • Why this Medical test is required ?
  • What specific ailments are they looking for ?
  • In what circumstances this will lead to rejection of the candidate ?
  • Will this report be shared with the candidate ?
I request organisations to stop this practice & spend this money on better causes

DISCOUNT ON STOCK

Nothing sells without discount offers, be it electronics, garments, shoes, books, etc. You name the thing and it’s available at discount. Those were the times when it use to be annual feature ( usually around Diwali , Christmas in India) , then came “ Clearance Sales “ , “ Inaugural Discount” , “ Renovation Sale “ , “ Odd Lot Discount” , “ Factory Price” , “ Early Bird” & “ Seconds Sale” . Thanks to Wal Mart there are “ Every Day Low Price Offers” and these days complete Malls house only “ Discount Stores” .

What Next … ICICI Bank is offering discount of Rs. 50 on it’s follow on Public Issue. Good going, but what next?

Imagine ....A job prospect in his interview telling his interviewer that I'll offer you 15% discount on my current package if you hire me ..

Every thing comes for a price ( may be for a discount also )

GOING BACK TO SCHOOL

They say job is a god teacher , it teaches spme thing daily , every hour rather every moment . Most of the time it's what to do and many a times also what not to do . After 10 years of corporate working experience I think it's time to go back to school , formally . I was considering to refresh my MBA education , much has changed in the last 10 years . I came to know even "kotler" has been revised many a times.

Education too has changed since then . Doing a full time course from IIM / ISB requires at least one year ( difficult call to leave present job ; these EMIs change your life ) and also some ( may be lot) preparation from GMAT / CAT . The other easier options Management Development Programs ( MDPs or AMPs ) . When i researched on them , even they require reasonably big amount of money in a short time , almost INR 20000 a day for ISB.

I am thinking .... Cost Benefit Analysis you see.....

EMAIL IS PASSE ..TXT IS IN

PLS APRV 10.25% , 20MN DL ON WY.TKS

You are not excused if you don’t understand this . “TXT MSG” is the next big thing , it’s not only limited to the friendly chats between youngsters or coordinating for meeting times. The new users of this powerful tool are corporates . Email is passé , its only for records , this is how decisions happen in the rapidly changing amd highly competitive world.

By the way this txt is what a Manager wrote to seek approval from his boss for giving some special rate to his corporate client who was about to move his funds to another bank . It took around 45 seconds to close the deal . All his boss said was : “APRVD” , and the deal was closed . Emails , Approval notes shall certainly follow but afterwards , for records only.

TXT IS THE IN THING , IS IT APPROPRIATE IN THE CORPORATE WORLD ????

NON COMPETE CLAUSE

This one's not welcome from Infosys . ET reports that Infosys is soon going to ask it's employees to sign a NON COMPETE AGREEMENT letter . This means that Infosys's employees are contractually obligated to NOT join any of the competitors or clients with in six months of leaving Infosys.

Competition has been made clear including TCS, IBM, ACCENTURE , WIPRO. It might not be unusual but IS IT FAIR ?

Can Infosys sign an agreement saying that they'll not hire any staff from the IT BIG 5.????

UN HAPPINESS AT JOB

I read a post written by Dr. Gopalakrishnan , Chairman TATA Sons . It was about "Why people leave there job" .

To quote a part of it

"A lot of people leave an organisation because they are "unhappy". What is this so-called-unhappiness?

I have been working for donkey's years, and there has neverbeen a day when I am not unhappy about something in my work - environment, boss, rude colleague, fussy clients, etc. Unhappiness in a workplace, to a large extent, is transient.

If you look hard enough, there is always something to be unhappy about. But, more importantly, do I come to work to be "happy" in the truest sense? If I think hard, the answer is "No". Happiness is something you find with family, friends, may be a close circle of colleagues who have become friends. What you come to work for is to earn, build a reputation, satisfy your ambitions, be appreciated for your work ethics, face challenges and get the job done. "

I THINK STILL ORGANISATIONS CAN TRY TO MAKE ANSWER TO THIS QUESTION " YES".

Yes , I come to work to be " Happy" ... Is some one listening

THE GOOGLE PHILOSOPHY

The Google Philosophy - Never settle for the best .

Few of the The Ten Things at Google .

It's best to do one thing really, really well.
Well we all know what Google does .. Search

Fast is better than slow.
Google believes in instant gratification. You want answers and you want them right now. Google may be the only company in the world whose stated goal is to have users leave its website as quickly as possible.

You can be serious without a suit.
Google's founders have often stated that the company is not serious about anything but search. They built a company around the idea that work should be challenging and the challenge should be fun.Ideas are traded, tested and put into practice with an alacrity that can be dizzying. Meetings that would take hours elsewhere are frequently little more than a conversation in line for lunch and few walls separate those who write the code from those who write the checks.

Great just isn't good enough.
Always deliver more than expected. Google does not accept being the best as an endpoint, but a starting point.

WHAT'S YOUR PASSION ?

I am reading "Like a flowing river" by Paulo Coelho and came accross a very interesting note on Passion .
He says Passion is what you can talk about endlessly ; you'll like to find as much information as you can and read ; You love to interact with people who share common interest ; You go to sleep thinking about it , dream about it and wake up thinking about it.
Well said , I thought for a while and couldn't find a passion which fits in the criteria . I can definitely say my 2 year son has got one "watching Power rangers " on Jetix .
I recently read Vaidyanathan , 39 , Executive Director of ICICI Bank is learning Guitar , He also runs 21km every Sunday .
Did any one say , I don't have time to find / pursue Passion ?

OUR CONTRADICTORINESS !!!!

What's Human being's funniest characteristic ?

Jaime Cohen Says : Our contradictoriness.

We are in such a hurry to grow up , and then we long for our lost child-hood.

We make ourselves ill earning money , and then spend all our money on getting well again.

We think so much about the future that we neglect the present , and thus experience neither the present nor the future .

We live as if we were never going to die , and die as if we never had never lived

SLOW DOWN .... ENJOY LIFE

The Slow movement is a cultural shift towards slowing down life's pace. The Slow movement proposes consciously seizing control of time rather than being dictated by it and finding a balance between using time-saving technology and taking the time to enjoy a walk or a meal with others. Proponents believe that while technology can speed up working, eating, dating, etc. the most important things in life should not be rushed.

Basically, the movement questions the sense of "hurry" and "craziness" generated by globalization, fueled by the desire of "having in quantity" (life status) versus "having with quality", "life quality" or the "quality of being". French people, even though they work 35 hours per week, are more productive than Americans or British. Germans have established 28.8 hour workweeks and have seen their productivity been driven up by 20%. This slow attitude has brought forth the US's attention, pupils of the fast and the "do it now!"

The Slow movement first began when a protest against the opening of a McDonald's restaurant in Piazza di Spagna, Rome sparked the creation of the Slow Food organisation

The Slow movement advises some ways of slowing down:

.Get a Slow hobby, a leisurely pursuit like reading, writing, knitting, yoga, painting or gardening.

.Spread out your chores; do one load each day instead of all at once, or dust one day and vacuum the next.

.Stop watching the clock; on weekends try waking up to your body's natural rhythms rather than an alarm, and leave your watch at home

.Prepare a sit-down meal and savour it without watching TV, or reading. Enjoy the conversation if you're dining with others, or peaceful solitude if eating alone.

.On vacation slow down; don't try to cram every sight into your must-see list. Visit "slow cities" with local restaurants where you can eat slow

.Prune your to-do list; make time for the people and activities that you enjoy

We all have equal time throughout the world. No one has more or less. The difference lies in how each one of us does with our time. We need to live each moment.

As John Lennon said, "Life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans".

BRAGGING WITHOUT BLUSHING

Few of my friends say that any place is "Great Place to Work" as far as it makes them feel great , If so we need to be really good at one thing , blow our own trumpet . It's said in the corporate jungle - if you don't do it , no one else would.
Well this article would certainly help .
............................................
Modesty has no place in resumes, cover letters, bids, and other places where we are selling our strengths, abilites, and experience. Such documents require us to stifle a blush and write shamelessly about ourselves. However, when we write about ourselves there are many problems and common mistakes.
For many of us, it's difficult to write about ourselves without nagging, uncomfortable feelings. Maybe that's because of childhood messages we heard about being modest. I, for one, had an imposing old aunt who announced, whenever I was happily bragging, "Self-praise stinks."

Despite our discomfort and wherever it comes from, there are times when we are obliged to write proudly and confidently about ourselves; for example, in self-appraisals, resumes, cover letters, proposals, and bios. These documents require us to stifle a blush and write shamelessly about our accomplishments, experience, and skills.

Here are ten suggestions for writing proudly about yourself without blushing
1. Think about your pride and joy. If you have difficulty identifying your accomplishments or special strengths for a resume or self-assessment, think about what makes you proud in your work. Also, consider what gives you the greatest joy. Often these things-coaching managers, calming anxious visitors, solving systems problems, mentoring new employees-will help you identify your accomplishments. Once you have listed several accomplishments, try the STAR method, below.

2.Use the STAR method. In resumes, proposals, and self-evaluations, you must write convincingly about your strengths, skills, and accomplishments-that is, to write about yourself as a star performer. To do that successfully, use the STAR method. This method involves briefly describing a situation (S) or task (T), the action (A) you took to accomplish it, and the results (R) you achieved.

Management example: When I started as branch manager, annual employee turnover was 25 percent (S/T). I implemented an employee satisfaction survey and suggestion program, established coaching plans for supervisors, and instituted a weekly staff meeting (A). As a result of these efforts, the employee turnover rate is now 10 percent (R).
Training example: The challenge was to train staff in the new software by the opening of business on Monday (S/T). I designed, planned, and managed around-the-clock training using classroom instructors, online learning, and targeted job aids (A). On Monday morning, 96 percent of employees reporting to work had been trained in the new system (R).

3.Use specific examples. Specific examples add credibility. Although words like outstanding, dependable, and creative are positive, they don't always paint a convincing picture. Besides that, they may make you blush. In a bio, list your years of experience, impressive job titles, prestigious clients, certifications, education, or other relevant credentials. Instead of stating that you "always maintain good customer relations," cite customer-satisfaction surveys, letters of commendation, and the absence of any customer complaints about you.

4.Use numbers wherever possible. Numbers are concrete. They communicate a clear picture. By contrast, a "large staff" may be 20 or 200. If you are in charge of a large staff, budget, or region, use numbers to show how large it is. Alternatively, state specifically how long you have managed it.

Exaggerations or misstatements will not give you confidence, in addition to their obvious ethical implications.

5.Do not exaggerate or lie, even a tiny bit. Your self-assessment, bio, or resume should make you feel proud and help you speak confidently in an interview, performance discussion, or proposal presentation. Exaggerations or misstatements will not give you confidence, in addition to their obvious ethical implications. Even if something is true but sounds exaggerated, leave it out. One consultant's bio says that he himself has trained 350,000 people in 15 years. That's an average 23,333 people each year, or 449 participants each and every week for 15 years! While it may be true, without further explanation it sounds false. Save telling about such an amazing deed for a speech or conversation, where you can elaborate.

6.Use I. Many people have been taught in business or technical writing classes not to use the pronoun I. In some instances that may be useful advice, but in a cover letter or self-assessment it doesn't make sense. Feel free to write "I hired 200 interns" or "I wrote the final draft." If you participated in a successful group effort, you are still justified in using I: "With my team members, I won the Corporate Communications award in 2004." Vary your sentence structure if you find that you have too many sentences beginning with I. Change "I reduced turnaround time by 20 percent within a year" to "Within a year, I reduced turnaround time by 20 percent."

7.Give relevant information. Most self-assessments include specific categories: teamwork, communication, problem-solving, and so on. Be sure that the examples you give match the category; otherwise, they lose power.

8.Explain value. Be sure to tie results to organizational goals. For example, as the new safety coordinator at your organization, you may have conducted 40 safety inspections in your first three months. The number sounds impressive, but what does it mean? Is there a correlation between your inspections and a reduction in accidents or incidents? Whenever possible, translate your hard work into results your reader will value. Consider "negative data" to illustrate your effectiveness-information such as the absence of on-the-job accidents, lawsuits, and grievances.

9.Enlist the help of a friend. When you have drafted your resume, cover letter, application, bio, or self-appraisal, ask a friend to review it and answer these types of questions:

Are my examples specific?
Have I described my strengths accurately?
Is every statement clear?
Does every statement sound believable?
Is all the content pertinent?
Have I missed any relevant strengths or accomplishments?

10.Enjoy the smell. Life is too precious to be crippled by my aunt's "Self-praise stinks" rule. Feel free to ignore any of those old voices. Instead, enjoy the sweet smell of your success.

RIGHT TO INFORMATION - PRIVATE FIRMS NOT EXEMPTED

Well this is really a welcome news in India , if your bank; ICICI or HDFC , your telecome service provider ; hutch or airtel were thinking that they need not worry about RTI act , they are wrong .

Mint ( http://www.livemint.com) - newspaper reports that these private organisations can be approached thru thier regulators for information of public interest .

"Thus, information on telecom companies such as Bharti Airtel, the largest mobile telephonyfirm, can be accessed through the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India; that on banks throughtheReserveBank of India; and on brokerages and foreign investors active in stockmarkets fromthe Securities and Exchange Board of India".
“Applicants have every right to seek information on a private company even though it is in the private sector, if it reports to a government body,” Ansari says, citing sections of the Act that made this possible.Only applications that served public interest would be dealtwith, not those that sought to erode a company’s competitive position, M.M Ansari , Information Commissioner says.
Themessage: you can ask a cola company for details on how much water it used and where the water camefrom, but not the formula of its fizzy drink"
So I think , private companies better be prepared and soon we may witness some interesting applications , Wanna know how your bank calculates that penalty / charges / late fees etc on your credit card ?
Message : Be transparent , clear , honest & true ; Be Great place to work for .

MICHAEL DELL IS BACK..IT'S DELL 2.0

First of all let me aplogise for putting this internal mail of an organisation on my blog , as it's available all over ( net , newspapers , even ET ) so thought let me also share this .

So Michael is back , taking some really hard decisions including " No Bonus" still he might make Dell a great place to work , enjoy the message .

.................................................
Subject: Leadership Message from our Chairman and CEO
To: Dell Team Members Worldwide
From: Michael

We held a meeting this morning with our Vice Presidents and Directors. I'd like to share the highlights of this meeting with all of you.
I told our team that I remember the great times and many successes with Kevin Rollins, but now it's time for a change. We are not doing a COO or CEO search. I plan to be CEO for the next several years.
I remember what it's like to start a company. We're moving fast. There is no luxury of time. The competitors are fierce. The difference is this time we have many new assets and some hidden ones that can be brought out.
We have great people . . . but we also have a new enemy: bureaucracy, which costs us money and slows us down. We created it, we subjected our people to it and we have to fix it!

The #1 Tell Dell issue is bureaucracy and getting cooperation from other organizations.

I am asking each of you to look across your organizations and eliminate redundancies, think about what is best for Dell, and provide the clarity and focus of leadership that we need.

Last year, we worked really hard and there were many sacrifices. Thanks!

We had great efforts, but not great results. This is disappointing and it is unacceptable.

The result is that there will be no bonus this year. I know this is a big deal for you and your teams. We're going to fix that so that our efforts translate into great results and success for our teams.

But we still have great people who made great efforts. It's important to recognize your hard work, though our results fell short. Limited discretionary awards will be available to all but the most senior people. We can't cover everyone, but it will be a tool you can use.

And we are also budgeting for above-market raises this year.

For stock awards, we will shorten the vesting period from five to three years for future grants and move to restricted stock units.
And we're going to set the annual bonus plan against realistic targets.
We have a tough couple of quarters ahead. We didn't get here overnight and we won't fix things overnight either.
OPEX (operating expense) grew too fast. We need to grow into what we have, hold cost and eliminate marginal activities. If you have some, please stop them now and if you're not sure, bring them forward. We must focus and wring out savings.
Long-term, we will be the technology leader known for strong operating performance, a great experience for our customers and a great place to work!

We will have clear priorities and a focused strategy. ............

When I started in 1984, it was just me. But now we are blessed to have an awesome team, many great assets and $11 billion or so. It won't be easy, we'll have to make some tough decisions and we won't be shy about those. Our focus will be on building Dell into the company we all know it can be for our customers, our people and our shareholders.
To summarize, we will differentiate with CE (customer experience); deliver value, but go beyond this with our unique understanding of customers; move to Solutions and Services; use database marketing and targeting for smaller customers; leverage our unique supply chain; regain our cost position; and build some new sources of sustainable profit including using intellectual property to differentiate.

It's all part of Dell 2.0.

We will unify our leadership structure, from well more than 20 direct reports to 12. I'll be decisive, but also push many decisions to our leaders. We will speed decision-making and make decisions closer to our customers and have clear responsibility and accountability.
I ask you to commit with me to the future of Dell. Show confidence with your teams and our customers. We will fix this business and take it to new heights!

All the Best,
Michael

THE JOB OFFER

I must say that after doing jobs for a couple of years or more , we all realize that all that matters to make any place a “great place to work” is the job itself . What you are doing is what matters . If you get a job that entices you , even if it’s not exactly your hobby but you enjoy doing it , you’ll call any place a Great place to work.

Let me caveat this , do ensure that you check out for these things before you take up any new job.

Job Description
It’s the brief of your job containing your key responsibilities , key relationships and at times even authorities . It’s the brief which is given to the consultants by the organizations for hiring . Do ask for it , this is what would constitute your core job. Once you get this , make sure to discuss the same with HR or the Functional Managers to ensure that your understanding is correct. It’s never guaranteed that you’ll do exactly as the written thing but your job would certainly revolve around this.

Organization Structure
The corporate web you need to know . Ask clearly where do you fit in the organization chart . Be clear on your supervisor (s) , direct reports , indirect reports , people you need to have working relationship . Gather details about their scope of job & their grades

Designation / Hierarchy
Nothing is more confusing in life that this , there are internal designations , functional designations , bands , grades and what not .

Example : One person could be Deputy Vice President at Grade 3A and his business card reading as Director – Procurement .

Well you need to check what would be your functional designation ( usually what appears on your business card or to external world ) , your internal designation & your position in the hierarchy ( band or grade ).

Always consult people to find contacts in the organization you are planning to join , ask questions , ask more questions and then take your own call , All the best

CEEEEE TEEEE CEEEE ( CTC ).. Myth you are living with

Cost to Company or CTC as it's popularly called , amazing word it is . Mere use of this word inflates your salary ( may be ego , status & respect also) . We love to flaunt this , be it ex - colleague , relatives , friends , family or any body on the street . How far this is from reality is known to ; your spouse ( it's difficult to hide your salary from them ) or your account where your salary is getting credited .

My idea of this post is that you may keep happily using this word till you are not fooling your self or getting fooled by your employer ( present or prspective ).

Actually when it comes to salary truth can be divided in two :

Monthly : Right side bottom of your salary slip i.e what get's credited
Annually / Half Yearly : Bonus as credited in your account .

What bloats CTC artificially ? Let's study some of these factors , you must know this . Check out your offer letter / appointment letter or promise of your placement consultant

House Rent Allowance ( HRA ) :
Check the finer print , it varies from location to location . You might get transferred to Indore and your package may mention your HRA as per Mumbai . See how your real salary reduces .

Interest on Loans :
You may be offered a subsidised loan and the difference would be added to your package aka CTC . Check out for :
  1. What's the difference in the rate of interest calculation ?
  2. When you'll be elligible for this loan?
  3. Any clause that says that in case you leave with 2/3/4 years this portion would be reversed
Bonus :
Biggest of myths , your package may include performance bonus at a certian rate , check out for :
  1. When you'll be elligible for this ?
  2. How this has been calculated ? Average , At least or Maximum Elligible

Allowances :

At times you may find whole lot of allowances included in your package , Beware and check out for :

  1. Whether payable monthly or annually?
  2. Any elligibility condition?
  3. Any expenditure proof required ?

These some of the artificial inflationers , do check out for the complete offer carefully ask questions ( as many times as you want ) and then decide .

Till then keep quoting your CTCs happilly to the world ( Indian government or thier employees are still happy quoting their basic salary scales and actually their take home is much more than that including DA etc )

Must say that some organisations have started simplifying this CTC concept and are quoting what can be actually called WYSIWYG.

What you see is what you get , Can you say this for your salary and appointment letter ?
